Couplets

One of the most commonly seend decorations seen during Chinese New Year is the couplets. These couplets are usually pasted around the door and are made of red paper with black writings. The red and black is elegant and bright, and the sentences written will be written in a form of neatness and symmetry. As for the content, people tend to write down their wishes for the new year. Therefore the couplets can be a nice way to observe the different ideas of happiness among families.    

 

Chinese Red Lanterns

Chinese red lanterns are the ultimate symbol of chinese culture, as it is a traditional folk art. It has become a necessary part of Chinese New Year decorations and other festivals. These red lanterns will be found anywhere during the festival, parks, shopping malls, homes, streets and basically anywhere anyone can decorate. It is said that the lanterns symbolises family reunion, prosperity, happiness and vitality. Some people also say that having a lit lantern outside the front door will give hope for the new year.

The beautiful red Chinese Knots seen around during Chinese New Year are mostly used for decorations. It's a chinese folk art and is said to have been invented during the Tang and Song Dynasty. These days it's mostly used as decorations and gifts to friends and family. The knot is usually made of one rope, commonly it’s double layered, symmetrical and can be made up of several knots. There is a huge variety of different shapes of the knots and they have different meanings, including safety and luck. Knots are both beautiful and might bring some luck to the new year!

 

Paper Cuttings

Another commonly seen decoration during Chinese New Year is paper cuttings. It is a traditional folk art that is done with scissors and a cutting knife. People usually put the cuttings up on walls, windows, doors, columns and mirrors. The decoration symbolizes luck and happiness. They are also there to represent people's wishes for a good future and life. there is two most used characters 福 () which means lucky and 囍 (xǐ) meaning double happiness.

Flowers play an important role during the chinese new year celebration. There are several different flowers with different symbolic meanings. Flowers can be bought in different places including supermarket, flower market, new year flower market, department stores and and stores like japan home center. The different flowers have different meanings, orchids will bring fertility, abundance, luxury and innocence, while peach blossoms represent growth, prosperity and romance, narcissus symbolizes good fortune and prosperity and the pussy willow means prosperity and growth. There is a flower for any person and household out there. 




Trees

Another common decoration found in Hong Kong during Chinese New Year is trees of different types. The ones most seen are the mandarin trees, kumquat trees and orange trees. The kumquat tree is seen as good luck as it is pronounced as gam (金) which is the word for gold and good luck. The mandarin tree has a similar meaning as the kumquat tree but also represents the sun and its positive energy that lifts spirits.

It is getting normal to decorate the home with red in any form. Red fabrics are therefore added to the home environment in the form of table cloths, curtains, beddings, cushions and other things that can be changed to red. The colour creates a happy surroundings. The colour is a harmonious, warm and cheerful environment. 

 

Gold sycee

These small gold sycees are a symbol of wealth and prosperity. They are commonly seen during Chinese New Year. They can be found as toys, piggy banks, candy and paper recreations.
