It was started in 1880 when Dorabjee Naorojee Mithaiwala offered ferry rides across victoria harbour. At this time the ferry company was named Kowloon Ferry Company and only had single deck ferries which was changed to double deckers around 1890. However, it was not before 1898 that the ferry got the Star Ferry name we know today. The ferry ride is a cheap way to enjoy the view of Victoria Harbour, with the adult price ranging from 2.2$-3.7$ depending on the day. All the ferries have unique names all related to stars.
Even though there are several ways of crossing the harbour, Star Ferry is still one of the most popular ways of crossing the harbour. The ferry is dear to the heart of Hong Kongers, and is an important part of the cultural heritage of Hong Kong. Everyone takes the ferry in Hong Kong, no matter age, profession, income, status or lifestyle. Taking the ferry is one of the best ways to enjoy the view of the harbour which is one of the best views in the world. Some simply take the ferry to relax for 10 minutes in the busy city. Even though the boat has been upgraded to be more environmentally friendly, the smell of tar and old wood is still hanging in the air of the ferry. The classical wooden seats can be changed depending on the direction the passengers want to sit. The ferries are one of few things that has not been changed or modernized over the years in the city, which keep the nostalgia of old Hong Kong alive.
Even though the ferry is less efficient than other forms of transportation the ferries remain popular among Hong Kongers and tourists. One thing that should be said is that the Hong Kong skyline would not be complete without the Star ferry.
